The Miccosukee Tribe
Around 1956, the Miccosukee Trail Indians splintered. The divide occurred partially over the decision to create a constitution. While one faction, guided by youthful leadership, saw the need to negotiate with the U.S. under conditions favorable to the tribe, a smaller group resisted the push to be culturally or politically defined through such negotiations. A debate ensued as to which group best represented the interests of the majority of Miccosukee Trail Indians.
