Title

Members of the Seminole and Miccosukee Tribes in the Florida Senate in Tallahassee, Florida, 1976

Description

Representatives for both the Seminole Tribe of Florida and the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida continued to lobby the state and federal officials throughout the rest of the 20th and into the 21st century concerning a full range of tribal sovereignty issues. The Florida Indians successfully campaigned for favorable outcomes on land usage claims, water rights, and environmental restoration efforts in South Florida. Despite objections from state officials in Florida, they were also able to uphold their tribes’ sovereign position––as outlined by federal law––with regard to developing a lucrative gaming enterprise on their reservations.
