Title
Portrait of Osceola, Florida Indian Leader, 1837
Description
Although he was not actually a Native Chief, Osceola was a respected leader of mixed Southeastern Indian and Anglo-Saxon heritage. He led a faction of Native Floridians which resisted United States troops and would not consent to be removed to Oklahoma. He was captured in October 1837 by American forces and died in prison three months later on January 30, 1838. While his death caused some of his followers to quit the resistance, others continued their campaign with a renewed purpose.
