Title
William McKinley Osceola (Miccosukee) Presenting President Harry S. Truman with a Seminole Indian Shirt, 1947
Description
This photograph was taken at the time of the formal Everglades National Park dedication. Admiral Leahy is to the right of the President and U.S. Senator Spessard Holland is behind the President and the Admiral.
Toward the middle of the 1900s, the Florida Indians began to gain more public visibility. While members of the Miccosukee Indians living in camps near the Everglades—pictured here--were not yet actively pursuing federal recognition in the 1930s and 1940s, tribal members recognized the value of maintaining positive relations with the U.S. At the time of this photograph, the Miccosukee were still hopeful that the federal and state governments would not infringe on their land usage and autonomy within the Everglades.
