Description

Abiaka––also known as Sam Jones––was a charismatic 19th century Mikasuki (Miccosukee) leader who inspired his people to resist white encroachment into Florida and forced removal of Indians from the state. He and his band of warriors fought a number of skirmishes against U.S. troops, and he also aided his followers in eluding capture and deportation. While many members of his group were ultimately deported, he is recognized as a leading opponent to the relocation initiative.
