Several dozen Indians broke away from both the Seminole and Miccosukee Tribes in the mid-20th century as a result of disagreement with the two larger groups over how to interact politically with the federal and state governments. Establishing a community on the Western coast of Florida––in the area known as Immokalee––they did not want to be federally recognized by the U.S.
